The Expert at the Card Table , is an extensive book on the fine art of sleight of paw published in 1902 by S. W. Erdnase, a pseudonymous author whose identity has remained a mystery for over a century. ^[1] Equally a detailed manual of card sharps, the book is considered to be one of the most influential works on magic or conjuring with cards.

Despite his widespread influence on the magician community, the author's identity remains an unsolved mystery. Many believe his real proper noun was Eastward.Southward. Andrews (South.W. Erdnase spelled backwards). (Meet Gardner's Foreword, pp. 7-ix.) ^[two] Some other theory is that the author is Wilbur East. Sanders, son of Senator Wilbur F. Sanders. Due west.E. Sanders is an anagram of South. W. Erdnase, and Sanders had the instruction, cognition of magic, and familiarity with gambling necessary to write the book. ^[4]

Originally the author started selling the book for $two.00 in 1902 and the next twelvemonth information technology dropped to $1.00. A film based on the life of the mysterious author, adapted by German language managing director Hans-Joachim Brucherseifer, is currently in production. The magician Yann Yuro (a.yard.a. Florian Beyer) plays the lead role of S.W. Erdnase. Information technology is scheduled to exist released in late 2022.
